What is ADR transport and when do you need it?
ADR is the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. It sets out how dangerous goods must be classified, packaged and labelled, which vehicles may carry them, what training the driver needs and which documents must travel with each consignment. In Spain it applies to both international and domestic journeys.
You need ADR transport when your product is classified as a dangerous good: flammable, corrosive, oxidising or toxic substances, gases, or any material that poses a risk to people or the environment during carriage. The deciding factor is the product's UN number, which you will find in section 14 of its safety data sheet.
ADR transport with certified drivers and authorised vehicles
Every dangerous goods shipment we handle meets the requirements ADR places on the carrier:
• Drivers with a valid ADR certificate, the special licence required by the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) to drive vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
• Vehicles authorised for ADR, carrying the mandatory on-board equipment (fire extinguishers, emergency kit, personal protective equipment) and marked with orange plates and hazard labels according to the goods.
• The transport document and the instructions in writing are checked before departure.
• Stowage and load securing in line with EN 12195-1, carried out by our own staff.
• Route planning that takes into account traffic restrictions and road tunnel categories for dangerous goods.
Before confirming any job, we check that the product, the quantity and the packaging are compatible with our authorisations and our vehicles.
How to book dangerous goods transport with MAVI
ADR transport is organised before the truck leaves. The process is simple when the information arrives complete from the first contact:
1. Send us the details of your goods
Product name and UN number, quantity, type of packaging (drums, IBCs, jerrycans, pallets), package dimensions, collection and delivery addresses and the planned date. If you have the safety data sheet, attach it.
2. We check compatibility and send you a quote
We confirm that we can handle the shipment with our drivers and vehicles and send you a fixed quote, stating what is included and the loading and unloading conditions.
3. Collection and delivery with the paperwork checked
On the agreed day the vehicle arrives marked, with a certified driver and the transport document checked. We keep you informed until delivery.
What we need to quote for ADR transport
"Chemical product" or "hazardous material" is not enough to price an ADR shipment. To prepare an accurate quote we need:
• Product name and UN number (with class and packing group if you know them).
• The product's safety data sheet.
• Total quantity, number of packages and type of packaging.
• Dimensions of the packages or pallets.
• Full collection and delivery addresses.
• Loading and unloading conditions: equipment available, opening hours and access restrictions.
• Planned date and how flexible it is.
If you don't know how your goods are classified, ask your supplier or manufacturer. A photo of the packaging helps us understand the context, but it does not replace the technical data.
ADR route planning: tunnels and country restrictions
Every ADR load carries a tunnel restriction code (B, C, D or E) that determines which road tunnels it may pass through. When a load contains several dangerous substances, the most restrictive code applies to the whole vehicle. On top of that, each country applies its own traffic restrictions for dangerous goods on certain days and routes.
We factor all of this in when we plan the route, so your shipment is not held up at a border or in front of a restricted tunnel, and the delivery date we give you is realistic.
Dangerous goods transport across Spain and Europe
Our base is on an industrial estate in Vila-real (Castellón), a few minutes from the Port of Castellón and half an hour from the Port of Valencia, right on the AP-7 and A-7 Mediterranean corridor. From there we provide ADR transport for the ceramic, chemical and logistics industries of the province and the Valencian Community, with departures to anywhere in Spain.
We also carry out international ADR transport across Europe, planning each route around the restrictions of every country on the way. For exporters, the ports of Castellón and Valencia are within easy reach for container and short-sea connections.
Areas we work in most often: Castellón de la Plana, Vila-real, Almazora, Onda, Alcora, Nules, Burriana, La Vall d'Uixó, Sagunto, Valencia and the industrial estates along the Mediterranean corridor.
Industries that trust MAVI with their dangerous goods
Many packaged products in everyday industrial use are subject to ADR and need an authorised carrier to leave the factory. The sectors we serve most often are:
• Ceramics and glazes: frits, glazes, inks and additives for the tile industry.
• Industrial chemicals: acids, bases, solvents and intermediates in drums or IBCs.
• Paints and coatings: paints, lacquers, resins and flammable thinners.
• Agrochemicals: plant protection products and fertilisers for co-operatives and distributors.
• Cleaning and cosmetics: detergents, bleach, aerosols and alcohols.
• Automotive and energy: batteries, oils, lubricants and gases in approved packaging.
Every product is assessed individually. Send us the UN number and we will confirm whether we can take the shipment.
ADR transport and special transport: when they overlap
ADR is about how hazardous the goods are; special transport (abnormal loads) is about their dimensions or weight. They are two separate regimes that sometimes apply at the same time: a tank containing a chemical product that is also larger than a standard truck, for example. At MAVI we coordinate both in a single operation, with the movement permits and signage each case requires.

ADR transport in Spain: frequently asked questions
What is ADR transport?
ADR transport is the carriage of dangerous goods by road in accordance with the European ADR Agreement, which sets out how these goods must be classified, packaged, labelled, documented and transported, and what training the driver needs.
Which dangerous goods does MAVI transport?
It depends on the driver's and the vehicle's authorisation and on the type of shipment. Before confirming any job we check that the product, the quantity and the packaging fit our equipment. Send us the UN number of your goods and we will confirm.
How do I know if my goods need ADR transport?
Check section 14 of the product's safety data sheet. If it shows a UN number and a hazard class, the goods are subject to ADR. If you don't have the safety data sheet, ask the manufacturer or supplier.
How much does ADR transport cost?
The price depends on the route, the goods, the quantity and the loading and unloading conditions. We don't quote per kilometre without knowing the load. With the full details of the shipment we prepare a fixed, no-obligation quote.
What documents do I need to provide as the consignor?
The transport document describing the goods according to ADR (UN number, proper shipping name, class, packing group and quantity) and the product's safety data sheet. If anything is missing, we tell you before scheduling the collection.
How far in advance should I book?
The sooner the better, especially for international shipments. For regular domestic routes we can often arrange collection with a few days' notice, depending on availability.
Do you carry out international ADR transport?
Yes. We transport dangerous goods across Europe from our base in Castellón, Spain, planning each route around the traffic and tunnel restrictions of every country.
Do you handle ADR part loads or groupage?
Ask us. Depending on the compatibility between the goods and the route, it is sometimes possible to combine shipments. We confirm it when we assess the job.
Are ADR transport and special transport the same thing?
No. ADR relates to how hazardous the goods are; special transport (abnormal loads) relates to their dimensions or weight. A load can need both at once, and in that case we coordinate both in a single operation.
